Happy Life Day

As we all gather round for the upcoming holiday, the release of Episode VII, it’s a good time to sit down with family and reflect on just how godawful mixing Star Wars and Christmas have been in the past.

Martin Luther King Day

David Atkins has some selected quotes from Dr. King, some of which ring quite true for our modern times and all of which are largely ignored by politicians and the media who would rather ignore Dr. King’s appeals on economic inequality.

It was about much more than simple discrimination when Dr. King reminded us that

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.”To the wealthy who insisted that fair taxation to help pay for the common good should be eschewed in favor of the charity of their choosing, Dr. King responded:

“Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.”To those contented with economic inequality who called him a rabble-rouser, Dr. King responded:

“There are certain things in our nation and in the world which I am proud to be maladjusted and which I hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted…I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few.”

Merry Christmas

My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?

– Bob Hope

May the Lord bless you this day as we remember that the greatest love is not merely words, but a very personal and continual giving of ourselves to one another in the highest imitation of Christ who left His heavenly domain and put on human flesh and limitations that He might be a light to we who were living in darkness, who spent His earthly life attending to our physical and spiritual needs, and who ultimately gave His life that mankind might share in His eternal state.

Merry Christmas

Presented because seriously… it’s Christopher Lee doing metal covers of Christmas carols. If this doesn’t put you in the Christmas spirit, check yourself for green fur and a heart three sizes too small.

Holiday ettiquette…

Rather than taking sides in the “War on Christmas” (of which Christmas has not only won, but is fast taking over Halloween), it is perfectly acceptable to simply wish someone a hearty “Bah! Humbug!” until Christmas day itself.
